notes from the garden

Currently at the Garden-  Saturday a group of us met at the Kitchen Garden in order to officially
welcome new gardeners Sam Bercovich, Linda McCarthy, and Gabriela Munoz who will be working in the garden this year.  Mark Pennington and Solange Viggiano were also present and we spoke a bit about our backgrounds and vision for the garden.  We also went over some of the gardening fundamentals such as location of tools and how to use the watering hose and compost bins.  It was nice to see that our perennial herbs such as sage, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm, cilantro, mint and chives are all doing well.

Next Steps at the Garden-  This coming Saturday May 2 ( 10 am to noon) we may be able to begin planting our first vegetables most likely leafy greens such as lettuce. We can also work on expanding our herb garden, aerating the beds and perhaps expanding one of our vegetable beds.  We also need to set up a watering schedule so that tha garden is watered at least 3 times during the week.

We still have 2 family plots available for anyone interested in growing their own vegetables.  We also welcome gardeners who want to work as a group on Saturdays, knowing that most of this harvest will go to the food pantry.  The Kitchen Garden is open to all so you can stop by anytime even if just want to stroll around or pick a few weeds or herbs (try not to confuse them).

A special thanks to Linda Jo who informed us that that her nursery school children will soon be planting peas and carrots into our garden.

Thanks,

Marc Taiano and Solange Viggiano
